Masquerade Ch8Xander found that between the pain of his healing wound and his discovery, it was impossible to focus on anything else. He kept finding his eyes on Drey, and the nagging voice would not shut up. It was right of course. Drey might not have been beautiful like Astrid, but she was her own brand of pretty. And it was not at all like any girl Alexander had ever met.
He tried not to let it get in the way of their renewed friendship. He thought of the day before Solstice, when Drey had burst out with her secret. Why was the secret of her gender more important than the horrors of her past? It was stupid to Xander that she thought she had to hide that from him. Maybe there's a good reason, his subconscious suggested. Maybe it's because of the way you feel about her. He told himself to shut up, but he knew it was probably true. He didn't know when it had happened, but a twisting in his gut told him that he had passed from friendly affection into something he didn't want to think abMasquerade Ch8 by ~blankfaceisclaimed
Masquerade Ch7Drey was standing on the deck of the ship, staring down at the port. She'd never set foot on an airship before, but her body was already adjusting to the dip and sway. They hadn't taken off yet. She watched the rope-men scrambling, making sure that the lines didn't tangle, and that the ships were anchored securely. The sailors on deack started releasing the hooked lines, freeing the ship from the tower dock. The ship lurched away, and Drey spread her feet to maintain balance.
And then they were flying, the wind biting her face. Drey climbed up onto the bow. She looked down and saw the towns far below. A silver line snaked across the countryside. It barely registered that that was a river. She clung onto the ropes and leaned out over the railing. It was exhilarating to look down at the ground and know that she was flying.
"Go any farther and you'll fall right off." Drey turned her head. Liquid, golden eyes met hers. She gave the sailor a mischievous smile, and leaned over the edge untilMasquerade Ch7 by ~blankfaceisclaimed
Masquerade Ch6Drey ignored them. Completely. Rudely. But it seemed Astrid was right- Drey was a dashing boy. She would have thanked god for Alexander pulling the girls away if she hadn't stopped believing in any gods.
But Drey was jealous of Xander. He could talk and laugh and be at ease and not have to pretend. For him, it was so much simpler. Drey looked at the painting she'd anonymously submitted for the gallery. If only life could be as simple as painting. If only she could draw her life out differently with a pencil and a paintbrush. She wondered if Xander liked the girl he was dancing with. She was pretty, but then, there were a lot of pretty girls in the room. Drey wondered what sort of affect she'd have had if she'd entered the room as a girl, in a gown, with waves of red hair. She hadn't worn a dress in years. She didn't miss the cumbersome skirts that tangled around her feet.
But seeing that girl, Drey ached to stop hiding. Because secrets had a way of sneaking up on you. Of twisting and tMasquerade Ch6 by ~blankfaceisclaimed
Masquerade Ch5Xander set the package at the side of Drey's bed. It seemed pitiful, now that he knew. He wasn't sure if he still wanted to know. But Xander knew that Drey would like the gift, regardless. He looked at Drey's sleeping form. The dark circles hadn't faded. Seeing how vulnerable Drey looked, Alexander wondered how he could have survived. Alexander sighed, and pulled the blanket over Drey's shoulders.
He sat down next to the package, resting his back on the side of the bed. And waited.

Yesterday, after her pained confession, they had walked back. The silence was no longer beautiful. It hurt. It was suffocating. So stupid. So very stupid to have lost control like that. She didn't say anything to him at dinner. The special Solstice Eve meal turned to ashes in her mouth.
They had been warm. Comforting. His arms had simply held her, and they were exactly what she had needed. She wished it had actually meant something.
She wanted to tell him. The entire truth. She didn't.

Red and Black 7    Marco wakes up at noon and slips out of camp to take a trip around Coronae. The buzz about the Imperial Ball has only grown louder over the past few days. The first round of invitations have been sent out, and the rest of the society elites wait to see who will be chosen. Marco expects that Phillip will be sent an invitation, as has been the case for years. The invitations are always different, printed on thick stock. The colors and the theme change with each year, and those are in and of themselves a topic of debate. 
    The streets are crammed with people, with buggies and coaches. Marco slips through the traffic and towards a familiar shop. Though Madame is an excellent seamstress, there is not much she can do about accessories without Kayden. And Marco needs something nice. 
    He has been to this shop a dozen times before, so it is a surprise to see her when he comes through the door.Red and Black 7

Red and Black 6    Kayden lies awake in bed, unable to sleep once more. Ari's pessimistic hunch has her in turmoil. Percy has insisted that they stay until the Ball, but she doesn't know what will happen once the Ball has come and gone. She will have to find out the truth by then, or risk never knowing. That thought alone is enough to keep her awake.
    She tosses and turns for another few minutes, trying to quiet her mind before giving up. She stands, makes her way to the door, pauses, and steps out into the hallway. Her feet take her to Ari's door, but she stops again. She is unwilling to go to him, mainly out of pride. For most of her life, she has never needed the comfort of another human being. Now, she is reluctant to admit that she needs anyone, let alone Ari. Yet, in a cruelly appropriate way, he is the person who would best understand her pain. Perhaps that is why, now, she stands in front of his door, one hand raiseRed and Black 6

Red and Black 5    After a few days, the shift in his attitude becomes insufferable. Though he hides it well enough around company, he is bordering antagonistic when they are alone. Every word he says is laced with something like derision. When she can stand it no longer, she storms out of the room without bothering to explain, or to ask for an explanation.
    "Sometimes, I wonder if you're really acting," Ari says one evening. They are in the gardens, exploring the maze of hedges. Trellises hang with ivy, with honeysuckle and roses. It is twilight, and the lanterns have been lit. They glow softly, like fireflies. Kayden holds back her annoyance and keeps walking. Her boots make no sound on the stone paths. They come upon a fountain, a smaller version of the one in the courtyard. It is surrounded by a circular wall creeping with ivy. Koi swim in the pool, flitting in and out of the shadows of lilies.

Red and Black 4    Kayden spends her afternoon alone, wandering the streets of Yassat, the capitol of Jacinthe. Though Terra had offered to go with her, Kayden finds wandering alone to be more appealing today. She pauses to admire blown glass bottles, fine porcelain cups, carved sandalwood amulets. The people who mill around her all share the characteristic golden eyes of the Jacin. The black of their hair ranges from ebony to jet. Many stare at her own red hair, and after awhile she makes it turn black to avoid attention. Her long skirts catch almost as much attention as her hair did, but she doesn't care enough to alter them.
    She buys a small bottle of pale blue glass painted with iridescent green and gold enamel, like the feathers of a peacock. Kay stops at a table where a woman has laid out fine silk and lace scarves. After a moment of doubt, she purchases a grey lace scarf interwoven with glittering silver thread. The woman smiles when Kay hands her a pair of silver Red and Black 4

Red and Black 3    They move locations without warning, disappearing from the field as if they were never there. It will be more than a year before they return to the outskirts of Carnat. The carnival packs up as mysteriously as it arrives, or so it seems to the many patrons.
    The tents disappear, folding into themselves, becoming boxes and compartments. Kayden stands on the field and watches the tents shrink and collapse into neat little rooms. She knows without knowing that it is Phillip's doing.
    The public tents, all of the food carts and even the clock are contained within a single container. The transformation itself is not complete. The boxes become rooms of a massive ship. A ship that flies.
    She has seen airships before, but has never flown on one. The rules of physics are bent considerably by this particular ship. Her own tent fits within a room that appears half the size of the space that it contains. And all of her things remain in the exacRed and Black 3

I really, really love your gallery but do you think you could give your characters more emotion and facial expressions? It gets boring when they're all making the same face.
